2nd edition of the Sona UB competition

The University of Barcelona is organizing the second edition of the Sona UB competition, with the aim of promoting musical talent among its community. Bands and artists from the UB community (students, technical staff, management, administration and services staff, and teaching and research staff), with or without published albums and with original compositions of a minimum duration of thirty minutes, are eligible to apply. Only one musical proposal per band may be submitted.

The University of Barcelona is organizing the second edition of the Sona UB competition, with the aim of promoting musical talent among its community. Bands and artists from the UB community (students, technical staff, management, administration and services staff, and teaching and research staff), with or without published albums and with original compositions of a minimum duration of thirty minutes, are eligible to apply. Only one musical proposal per band may be submitted. 
It is now possible to participate by accessing the call for entries published on the competition’s website. The period for submitting compositions runs from 8 April to 11 May. An evaluation committee made up of specialists and people from the world of the arts and music will choose ten finalists, evaluating aspects such as the originality of the musical proposals, the work on new formats, the expressiveness and originality of the lyrics, the ability to communicate and connect with the audience and the use of the Catalan language. The members of the committee are: 
 
  • Magda Polo Pujadas, Professor of Music and Aestheticsat the Department of History of Art. She edits the indexed journal Matèria. Revista internacional d’art and curates the UB’s Dance Season. She is also the president of the Associació de Professors i Professores de Música de la Universitat Pública Espanyola (APMUPE), coordinator of the Research Committee of the Spanish Society of Aesthetics and Theory of the Arts (SEyTA) and principal investigator of Mousiké (Music and Gender) and Ekho (Musical Creation).  
  • Pol Segarra i Carré, head of the Music Department at TRESC and graduate in Communication and Cultural Industries from the UB. 
  • Marta Mei, director of the Casa de la Música in Hospitalet, advisor to the artistic direction of the FiM in Vila-seca and music manager. 
  • Eduard Balaguer, manager of Acadèmia Catalana de la Música. 
  • Arnau Seguí Pérez, graduate in Communication and Cultural Industries (UB), music manager and label manager of the Indian Runners Cultural Association. 
  • Erxart Casas Llargués, winner of the 2024 Sona UB competition. 
The finalist proposals will be put to a popular vote: members of the UB community will be able to vote between 30 May and 9 June. 

The winning participants will be announced on 10 June and will perform as guest artists at one of the Els Vespres d’Estiu 2025 concerts on 8, 10, 15 and 17 July. The prize also includes a promotional photo session for the concert, a UB merchandising products voucher worth 50 euros and activities aimed at the musical projection of the groups, promoted by TRESC, the producer of Els Vespres d’Estiu. These sessions will include artistic and technical advice, and strategic and promotional accompaniment. 

In addition, four additional categories and prizes will be established among the four winning artistic groups: the Promesa prize, for the participants with the shortest career and the highest artistic quality; the Accent prize, for the participants with the greatest diversity of origins; the Discurs prize, for the participants with the most elaborate social or cultural discourse; and the Qualitat Artística prize, for the participants with the most elaborate or professionalised sound quality.
