Until 29 May, an exhibition commemorating how Franco’s dictatorship was experienced at the University of Barcelona’s Faculty of Law, as well as the actions taken there to fight against the regime, can be seen at the Faculty. The exhibition, “The Right to Resistance: A Faculty Committed to Democracy,” features texts and photographs such as those of the massive pro-amnesty assembly held on 3 February 1976, 50 years ago.

“Basically, the exhibition focuses on the period from December 1970 to February 1976, which was quite complicated for the Faculty: there was no dean because Franco’s government did not want to accept the proposal presented by the Faculty Board,” explains Rosa Ana Alija, vice-dean for Social Commitment, Equality and Communication. The situation ended with Manuel Jiménez de Parga taking office as dean, which marked the beginning of a new era in a social context of transition to democracy. “We want to highlight how the faculty committed to greater democracy in its functioning, which did not please Franco’s government. In fact, it was the first time in the history of Spanish universities that students participated in the election of the dean,” continues Alija. The exhibition presents panels grouped into thematic blocks, such as repression and protest or inequality and culture.

On the same day that the exhibition opened, a plaque was unveiled in the Tomàs i Valiente building of the Faculty of Law with a brief biography of Francesc Tomàs i Valiente, a lawyer murdered by ETA in February 1996, 30 years ago.
