The event highlights the impact of a key initiative for research in university teaching.
On Tuesday 11 February, the University of Barcelona celebrated twenty years of the REDICE (Research in University Teaching) programme with a commemorative event held in the Aula Magna of the Historic Building from 10.00 am to 12.15 pm. The event, organized by the Research Section of the Institute for Professional Development (IDP), highlighted the impact of this initiative on the improvement of teaching quality and the promotion of research at the university level.
The event began with the official inauguration, which included several speeches. Through a video, the rector of the UB, Joan Guàrdia, wanted to recall the “modest beginnings of REDICE — with more will than trajectory — and, after twenty years, it has become a reference programme throughout Spain”, while the vice-rector for Teaching Policy, Concepció Amat, highlighted “the growing and fundamental importance that REDICE represents in this field”. On the other hand, the director of the IDP, Maria Rosa Buxarrais, said that “teaching is not only the transmission of knowledge, but a heavy task for students to develop critical thinking and become committed citizens”, and the head of the IDP’s Research Section, Roser Bono, wanted to highlight “the increase in quantity and qualitative ambition regarding the research projects of the REDICE calls over the last twenty years” as well as “the tangible impact they have had both on teaching and their direct repercussions in the classroom”.
This was followed by the round table “Trajectòria i assoliments de la convocatòria REDICE”. Lissette Fernández, from the IDP Research Section, Gloria Rubert, from the Faculty of Economics and Business, and Anna Villarroya, from the Faculty of Information and Audiovisual Media, took part in this session, which was chaired by Roser Bono.
The event ended with the conference “El enfoque académico de la docencia y del aprendizaje. ¿Cuál es el horizonte?”, given by Idoia Fernández, lecturer at the University of the Basque Country. The speaker was introduced by Maria Rosa Buxarrais, director of the IDP.
The REDICE call, launched in 2004, has established itself as an essential tool for promoting educational research at university level. In these twenty years, it has supported 333 projects, which have addressed topics such as active methodologies, the application of big data and artificial intelligence in education, the gender perspective and the development of transversal competences. More than 3,000 researchers have participated in the call and it has generated more than a thousand scientific results, including articles, book chapters and communications at conferences.
REDICE is characterized by the competitive approach and methodological rigour of the selected projects, which have contributed to the consolidation of multidisciplinary research groups at the UB and to the improvement of teaching quality. The event to commemorate the 20th anniversary of REDICE was an opportunity to take stock of this trajectory and establish new objectives to continue innovating in teaching and learning processes at the university level.
