The University of Barcelona is once again among the 200 best universities in the world in the new edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), known as the Shanghai Ranking. The results of this classification, which were made public today, also indicate that the UB is the only Spanish university in the 151-200 range, a fact that consolidates it as a leader in Spain.

The rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Guàrdia, highlighted “the value of maintaining this position of excellence and leadership that makes us leaders in the Catalan, Spanish and Latin American university systems”.  “We must place even greater value on the results achieved by the UB and the Catalan university system” he stressed, “because we are in leading positions in a ranking that evaluates a huge number of universities, even though our budgetary capacity is well below that of universities ranked in the top 100.”
“Despite the methodological limitations of rankings, which contrast with the complexity of evaluating university institutions such as ours, their reputational component and their importance in the management and projection of the UB is worth highlighting”, concluded the rector.

The ARWU list is one of the most prestigious rankings internationally. It analyses around 2,500 universities worldwide and publishes the list of the top 1,000. The UB achieves a strong score in the indicator that quantifies indexed publications (scientific performance), with a score of 49.2, and improves significantly in per capita performance, with 27.4 points.

Once again, American universities lead the world ranking. The top positions are held by Harvard and Stanford, while the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is placed third. In total, Spain has 10 centres among the 500 top universities in the world. Universitat de València is in the 201-300 range. The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, the Complutense University of Madrid, Pompeu Fabra University, the University of Granada and the University of the Basque Country are in the 301-400 range, and the Universitat Politècnica de València and the University of Seville are in the 401-500 range.

The ranking is based on the analysis of bibliometric data in six indicators: number of prestigious awards (Nobel, Fields Medal) obtained by university students and staff; highly cited researchers in the 21 research areas determined from the Clarivate databases; articles published in Nature and Science; articles registered in the Science Citation Index Expanded and the Social Science Citation Index, and academic productivity relative to the size of the institution (performance).
