The University of Barcelona is ranked 81st in the Ranking Web of Universities (Webometrics), climbing up nineteen places compared to last year. The UB is once again the leading university in Spain and it is the 16th in Europe.
In Spain, the UB is followed by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (position 150) and the Complutense University of Madrid (position 161). The ranking is headed by Harvard University, Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Webometrics uses scientific performance indicators such as citation data from the Google Scholar database and the most cited publications in Scopus (Elsevier). It also uses indicators of websites and their activity to globally rank universities in terms of teaching, research and transfer. The ranking aims to promote the academic presence on the web, while supporting open access initiatives. It aims to increase the transfer of knowledge generated in universities to society as a whole. It is compiled by the Cybermetrics Laboratory of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), and measures the websites of more than 31,000 universities worldwide.
