The University of Barcelona is ranked 82nd in the world in the Best Global Universities (BGU) ranking. It is also the 28th top European university and continues to be the leading university in Spain.

The University of Barcelona is ranked 82nd in the world in the Best Global Universities (BGU) ranking. It is also the 28th top European university and continues to be the leading university in Spain.

The UB is followed by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (position 130), the Universitat de València (261) and the Pompeu Fabra University (276).

By areas of knowledge, the UB stands out in gastroenterology and hepatology, where it is ranked third in the world. The UB shows outstanding positions in infectious diseases (13th position); surgery (27th); oncology (29th); clinical medicine (35th); psychiatry and psychology (38th); immunology (45th); marine and freshwater biology (48th); neuroscience and behaviour (59th); cardiac and cardiovascular systems (72nd); arts and humanities (80th); pharmacology and toxicology (82nd); public, environmental and occupational health (82); ecology (91); physics (96); space sciences (98); radiology, nuclear medicine and medical imaging (99); and molecular biology and genetics (100).

The ranking also shows that the UB stands out especially in research reputation in Europe, where it is ranked 22nd; in the number of papers that are in the top 1% of the most cited (position 61); in total citations (70); in scientific publications (75); and in the number of publications in the top 10% of the most cited (84).

The new edition of the BGU ranking is headed by US institutions: Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University, followed by Oxford University (United Kingdom).

​​​​​​​The ranking is based on a set of indicators on global research reputation, regional reputation, publications, citations, conferences and international collaboration, among others.
