The University of Barcelona stands out in 44 disciplines, two more than last year, out of the 55 analysed in the new edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, published today. The UB is ranked among the top 100 in the world in a total of 22 disciplines. In addition, it has consolidated its position as the Spanish leader: it is the Spanish university that stands out in the most disciplines and achieves first place in Spain in 22 subjects.

The University of Barcelona stands out in 44 disciplines, two more than last year, out of the 55 analysed in the new edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, published today. The UB is ranked among the top 100 in the world in a total of 22 disciplines. In addition, it has consolidated its position as the Spanish leader: it is the Spanish university that stands out in the most disciplines and achieves first place in Spain in 22 subjects.
This international ranking evaluates the position of 1,747 institutions worldwide in disciplines corresponding to the fields of knowledge of arts and humanities, social sciences and business management, life sciences and medicine, natural sciences, and engineering and technology. The UB is among the top 100 worldwide in life sciences and medicine (55th position), natural sciences (79th) and arts and humanities (83rd).
The University of Barcelona is one of the top 100 in the world in archaeology, philosophy, pharmacy and pharmacology, biological sciences, psychology, environmental sciences, education, modern languages, physics and astronomy, anatomy and physiology, medicine, dentistry, anthropology, marine and earth sciences, geology, geo-social policy and administration, development studies and sports-related disciplines.
In terms of the indicators used in the ranking, the UB scored particularly well in the number of citations of publications in Physics and Astronomy (95.3 out of 100). As for the h-index, the indicator that quantifies the performance and impact of publications, the best score is for Pharmacy and Pharmacology (87.8). The best employer reputation score is for library and information management (80.3). Regarding the academic reputation, the best score is 80.7 for environmental sciences. As for the international research collaboration indicator, chemistry stands out with a score of 84.2.

Spanish leader in the SCImago Institutions Rankings
The University of Barcelona is ranked 45th in the world among higher education institutions in the SCImago Institutions Rankings and climbs 46 positions compared to the previous edition. The UB moves up to 7th place in western Europe, compared to last year’s 19th place, and it now occupies the first place in Spain.
This ranking evaluates more than 5,000 universities worldwide using various indicators based on research performance, innovation results and social impact. The UB stands out especially in the indicators related to research, where it is ranked 64th in the world, and in social impact, where it climbs positions and reaches the 46th place in the world. This year, the ranking has incorporated methodological changes in the area of social impact. Specifically, it has included new indicators on the generation of knowledge related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the participation of women in research and the application of research results to improve public policies.
The Spanish universities that follow the UB in the ranking are the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (79th) and the Complutense University of Madrid (141st).
Moreover, the UB is the leading university in Spain and ranks among the top 50 in the world in the arts and humanities (number 19 in the world) and in agriculture and biological sciences, biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology, medicine and pharmacology, toxicology and pharmacy. It is the Spanish leading institution in the latter four areas and also in chemistry, earth and planetary sciences, economics, econometrics and finance, environmental sciences and psychology.
The SCImago Institutions Rankings include institutions from different sectors: governmental entities, health institutions, universities, companies and non-profit organizations. In this edition, the top position goes to Harvard University, followed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, Harvard Medical School and Zhejiang University.
