The UB ranks among the world’s top 100 in 23 subjects and among the top 50 in medicine and library and information science

- The University of Barcelona excels in a total of 46 disciplines and is the top-ranked Spanish institution in the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

The University of Barcelona excels in 46 subjects — two more than last year — out of the 55 analysed in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, ranking among the world’s top 100 in 23 subjects, one more than in the previous edition. Furthermore, it has consolidated its position as the national leader: it is the Spanish university that stands out in the largest number of subjects and ranks first in Spain in 22 of them.

The University of Barcelona excels in 46 subjects — two more than last year — out of the 55 analysed in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, ranking among the world’s top 100 in 23 subjects, one more than in the previous edition. Furthermore, it has consolidated its position as the national leader: it is the Spanish university that stands out in the largest number of subjects and ranks first in Spain in 22 of them.
This international ranking assesses 1,912 institutions worldwide across disciplines in the fields of arts and humanities, social sciences and business administration, life sciences and medicine, natural sciences, and engineering and technology. The UB ranks among the world’s top 100 in life sciences and medicine (58th), natural sciences (83rd) and arts and humanities (87th).
In specific disciplines, the UB ranks among the world’s top 50 in medicine and in library and information science. It also ranks among the top 100 in archaeology, modern languages, philosophy, anthropology, education, hospitality and leisure management, social policy and administration, sociology, sports-related disciplines, data science and artificial intelligence, mining and mineral engineering, biological sciences, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy and pharmacology, psychology, chemistry, earth and marine sciences, environmental sciences, geology and geophysics.
Regarding the indicators used in the ranking, the UB scores particularly well in the category of research citations per paper in physics and astronomy (with a score of 93.6 out of 100). As for the H-index — the indicator that quantifies the productivity and impact of publications — its highest score is in nursing (90.2). In academic reputation, the highest score is 80.5 for environmental sciences. The highest score for employer reputation is awarded to library and information science (78.4). For the international research network indicator, the UB stands out in medicine (82.3).
In Spain, the UB ranks first in 18 academic disciplines: archaeology, anthropology, English language and literature, data science and artificial intelligence, computer science and information systems, medicine, pharmacy and pharmacology, biological sciences, environmental sciences, psychology, education, chemical engineering, anatomy and physiology, earth and marine sciences, geology, geophysics, social and administrative policy, and chemistry.
Leading institution in Spain in the SCImago Institutions Rankings
The UB ranks 51st in the world among higher education institutions in the SCImago Institutions Rankings. It is ranked seventh in western Europe and first in Spain. The Spanish universities following the UB in the rankings are the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (ranked 91st) and the Complutense University of Madrid (152nd).
This ranking assesses more than 5,000 universities worldwide using a range of indicators based on research performance, innovation outcomes and social impact. The UB performs particularly well in the research-related indicators, where it ranks 73rd in the world, and in social impact, where it ranks 52nd.
