The rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Guàrdia, informed, during the Governing Council ordinary session, that the project of the new University of Barcelona Clinic Health Campus continues to take important steps under the leadership of the Government of Catalonia and with the close collaboration of the University of Barcelona, Hospital Clínic, the city councils of Barcelona, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat and Esplugues de Llobregat, and the Barcelona Provincial Council.
The Rector also announced that, as soon as the statutes of the consortium that will develop this project are available — when a closed proposal is available — they will be submitted to a vote at a forthcoming meeting of the Governing Council. This will define how issues such as urban planning, mobility and the construction of the buildings that will make up the Campus will be dealt with. In this regard, Guàrdia commented that, if all goes well, all the institutions promoting the project should give the first approval of the statutes on 26 May.
The Rector also explained the UB’s position in relation to the European Union’s new funding framework programme, which will begin in 2028. The EU intends to change its priorities to strengthen investment in research sectors where Europe is less competitive than countries such as the United States, China or Russia, which could put more basic research at risk. For this reason, the UB is committed to continuing to rely on an instrument such as the Framework Programme in the face of calls to prioritize the application of research funds in accordance with the principle of competitiveness.
Finally, Guàrdia also explained the new developments related to the creation of the European degrees, which are expected to be deployed in 2029; he spoke about the royal decree for the creation of new universities, which aims to regulate the launch of private higher education institutions in Spain, and mentioned the high-level meeting that took place in Paris, which was attended by rectors and vice-rectors of CHARM-EU.
Approvals
The Governing Council has approved the third Plan to improve the salaries of adjunct teaching staff, the call for teaching posts and the public employment offer for 2025 corresponding to technical, management and administration and services staff, among others.
