Today, Monday 21 October 2024, Josep Rull, President of the Parliament of Catalonia, visited the UB on a day focused on research and innovation, during which he had the opportunity to get to know some of the institution’s most outstanding projects.
The visit began in the Historic Building of the University of Barcelona, where President Rull was received by the Vice-Rector for Internationalization Policy, Raúl Ramos, and representatives of the UB’s Language and Computing Centre (CliC) research group. After signing the University’s book of honour, there was a showing of the Scribal platform, a machine translation system developed by this group, under the supervision of the lecturers from the Faculty of Philology and Communication Mariona Taulé, director of the group, Mireia Farrús, director of the Language Technology Service, and the research technician Pol Pastells.
Afterwards, Rull visited the Aula Charm, where the rector’s delegate for the European CHARM-EU alliance, Sergio Villanueva, presented the progress made in this initiative for transformative higher education in Europe.
After the first part of the visit to the Historic Building, President Rull went to the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), one of the most important scientific innovation centres in the country. On his arrival, he was welcomed by the Rector, Joan Guàrdia; the Vice-Rector for Research, Jordi Garcia; the Director of the PCB, Maria Terrades, and other authorities. The rector officially welcomed him and gave him an overview of the relevance of the PCB in the UB’s research ecosystem.
Josep Rull visited the most outstanding facilities of the PCB, including the new 1 Ghz nuclear magnetic resonance equipment, a state-of-the-art device that allows the molecular and structural composition of substances to be investigated with unprecedented precision. The director of the Scientific and Technological Centres of the UB (CCiTUB), Juan Fran Sangüesa, gave him a detailed explanation of the operation and applications of this device, which has positioned the PCB as a world reference in this type of technology.
Rull then visited the pilot production plant of the company QIAGEN, located in the basement of the Cluster II building of the PCB. This plant, dedicated to the manufacture of diagnostic tests, is an example of the collaboration between university research and the private sector, which promotes technology transfer and the development of innovative solutions in the field of health.
The visit was rounded off with a presentation by Jordi Bosch, vice-manager of Strategic Projects at the UB, in which he explained the future projects of the PCB and the Diagonal Health axis, a strategic initiative that seeks to consolidate the area as a biomedical research hub of international reference. This meeting was key to strengthening the links between the UB and public institutions in the field of research and innovation.
The day concluded with a meeting between the UB and the president of the Catalan Parliament, where strategic issues of collaboration and future projects were discussed. This visit reaffirmed the UB’s commitment to research, innovation and knowledge transfer, as well as its involvement in the scientific and technological development of the country.
