The Ramón y Cajal lecture room in the Historic Building of the University of Barcelona today hosted the launch of La Conversa, the Catalan edition of The Conversation platform. La Conversa strengthens Catalan as a language of scientific communication within a prestigious and influential global network for disseminating the research and knowledge produced in Catalonia. This initiative is promoted by the Vives Network of Universities and is supported by the Catalan Ministry of Language Policy and the Catalan Ministry of Research and Universities of the Government of Catalonia.

La Conversa strengthens Catalan as a language of scientific communication within a prestigious and influential global network for disseminating the research and knowledge produced in Catalonia. This initiative is promoted by the Vives Network of Universities and is supported by the Catalan Ministry of Language Policy and the Catalan Ministry of Research and Universities of the Government of Catalonia. 

he rector of the UB, Joan Guàrdia, spoke at the presentation ceremony to express his satisfaction with the launch of the project: “La Conversa represents a step forward in the University’s social responsibility.” He added that “scientific knowledge must have an active presence in public debate.” 

For his part, the Catalan Minister for Language Policy of the Government of Catalonia, Francesc Xavier Vila, noted that the language should be present in all areas of knowledge, including digital spaces and high-quality scientific dissemination, and has praised La Conversa as a strategic tool for consolidating Catalan as a language of science. 

Also participating in the event were the chair of the advisory committee of The Conversation Spain, Elea Giménez Toledo, and the professor of Catalan Philology at the Universitat de València and member of the Philological Section of the Institute for Catalan Studies (IEC), Maria Josep Cuenca.

A success from the start 

La Conversa has been publishing informative articles by research and teaching staff from Catalan-speaking territories, including the UB, since 10 February.  In recent weeks, it has achieved an impact that exceeds 33,000 reads. The platform will publish original articles in Catalan written by researchers from the region on a weekly basis, as well as selected translations of articles from other international editions.
