Around this time ten years ago, the University of Barcelona launched the Panera Solidària Christmas hamper draw, inviting the whole UB community to take part to win a whole host of prizes and help a social cause. This year, the money raised from the tickets will go to the Amics de la Gent Gran foundation, which aims to combat unwanted loneliness among the elderly. “It is necessary that people keep the elderly company and that we realize when we fall into ageism, into age discrimination”, says Lara, one of the volunteers of the organization.

“When Panera Solidària was created ten years ago, we were looking for a project linked to Christmas that would create a community at the UB and, at the same time, show the University’s solidarity”, says Pepa Soler, from the Corporate Image and Marketing Unit. Since then, the money from the hamper has been used to support various initiatives aimed at homeless people, those from conflict zones, those suffering from mental health problems and many other vulnerable groups.
Two women in love with Paul Newman
On this tenth anniversary, the UB’s Panera Solidària Christmas hamper is donating the proceeds to the Amics de la Gent Gran foundation. Joana has been taking part in the activities of this organization since the social services advised her to do so: they told her it would be good for her to break the loneliness in which she was living. They found her a partner: Lara, a former film student at the ESCAC (a UB-affiliated centre), who had signed up as a volunteer to keep some elderly people company. When Lara entered Joana’s house for the first time, she discovered that her walls were full of photographs of actors: their passion for cinema united them and, now, they never lack a topic of conversation when they met once a week. “We talk about films, and about men, about which of us is more in love with Paul Newman”, they explain.
Moreover, the organization organizes various activities, such as cultural outings, workshops, and a Christmas lunch when the season arrives. Joana and Lara encourage everyone to participate in the UB’s Panera Solidària, but also to volunteer at the organization. Lara emphasizes how much can be learned from the elderly.

Prizes
“At first, we didn’t know how people at the UB would respond and whether they would buy tickets for the Panera Solidària, but we’ve managed to get the community involved and we’ve raised more and more money”, says Pepa. In addition, during these ten years, the number of baskets that are raffled has increased to four, so that people who participate have more chances of winning. They are the Galet basket, the Tió basket, the Neula basket and the Pessebre basket. The four hampers are full of prizes, such as an acorn-fed Iberian ham, tickets for cultural shows, books, theatre and music tickets, wines, wafers and nougat, among many others.
Ros Oliva, a member of PTGAS at the UB’s CRAI, won the Christmas hamper a couple of years ago. He especially remembers how he enjoyed the dinner, the concert at the Palau de la Música and the Art Ticket that was included: “I bought a couple of tickets. I didn’t do it for the prizes — in fact, I never win anything — but out of solidarity”, he says, and he will buy some again this year.
The entire university community can participate in this year’s Panera Solidària until 17 December at: panerasolidaria.ub.edu.
