Objectiu París

A team formed by students from the faculties of Biology, Medicine and Health Sciences, Physics, Chemistry and Economics at the University of Barcelona will present the Reneurish project at the iGEM, the world’s most important synthetic biology competition, which will take place in Paris in October. The group of students is looking to win gold again, as they did in 2022 and 2023 in the same competition, with the Vesiprod and AlgaGenix projects, respectively.

As Marc Magem, a fourth-year student on the Biotechnology degree in the UB’s Faculty of Biology, explains, the project aims to develop a gene therapy that uses stem cells to improve the functional recovery of ischaemic stroke patients. The team, made up of thirteen students, has launched a GoFundMe campaign and an online merchandising store to cover the costs associated with running the project and participating in the competition.
Unlike in previous years, the project is being carried out entirely at UB research centres, under the supervision of Daniel Tornero, a lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Ana Sevilla, lecturer in the Faculty of Biology, and under the supervision of Gemma Marfany, professor at the Faculty of Biology.
