As of today, the University of Barcelona’s Torribera Campus has a new building that expands the campus’s teaching capacity for the bachelor’s and master’s degree courses it offers. The new lecture room, which is called Gramenet, has a surface area of 3,785 m2 and three floors, with capacity for more than 1,200 students. Among the attendees at the inauguration were Joan Guàrdia, rector of the UB; Filo Cañete, deputy for General Services and Digital Transition of the Barcelona Provincial Council, and Mireia González, the mayor of Santa Coloma de Gramenet.
The building, which was completed this year, houses the teaching spaces of the degrees in Human Nutrition and Dietetics and Food Science and Technology, as well as the Culinary and Gastronomic Sciences degree, which is coordinated by the CETT-UB. It also extends the teaching uses of the interuniversity master’s degree in Food Safety and part of the Master’s Degree in Nutrition in Physical Activity and Sport, as well as the courses of the Food and Gastronomy programme of the University of Experience.

During the inauguration, the new spaces of the Gramenet building were visited. It consists of 12 teaching rooms, 4 computer rooms, 7 seminar spaces, a multipurpose room with an office space for students and an undergraduate room with a capacity for 110 people.

Joan Guàrdia, rector of the UB, emphasized the importance of this inauguration: “Three elements are necessary to make ideas a reality: content, container and project. And today we find all three in a campus that is powerful, solid and internationally recognized”. Guàrdia also stressed that the aim of the UB is to provide “life, science and community” to the metropolitan area of Barcelona.

For her part, Filo Cañete, deputy for General Services and Digital Transition of the Barcelona Provincial Council, reiterated the commitment of Barcelona Provincial Council to this project: “We firmly believe in its potential to transform our community. The Torribera Food Campus is not only an educational and research centre, but also a driving force for economic and social development”.

Then, Mireia González, mayor of Santa Coloma de Gramenet, said: “The new facilities represent an opportunity for growth for Santa Coloma as a university city and we cannot waste the opportunities offered by having such a powerful knowledge ecosystem as Torribera. Our future as a city depends on this campus, as a hub of cultural and economic growth”.

Ramon Sanabria, one of the architects in charge of the construction of the building, highlighted some key aspects of the work, such as the “desire to reinforce the architectural and environmental quality of the campus”. Sanabria also mentioned that the building meets the strictest criteria of “sustainability and efficiency” and that it is a flexible project that incorporates “community spaces to generate synergies between all the people who will use it”.

The works on the Gramenet building were carried out by a team formed by SPG Arquitectura and Mangado y Asociados, led by the architects Ramon Sanabria and Patxi Mangado, who won the competition for the planning of the Torribera Food Campus, organized by the UB in collaboration with the Barcelona Provincial Council and the Santa Coloma de Gramenet City Council. The Barcelona Provincial Council has financed the construction of the building.

An essential pole in the food sector

The UB’s Torribera Food Campus is a benchmark for teaching, research and knowledge transfer in the field of nutrition and food science. This new building further strengthens the UB’s educational leadership in food science.

Architecturally, the new space has a linear construction and is oriented in a north-south direction, adapting naturally to the topography of the site. The building has two parts: one houses the classrooms and the other the stairs, lifts and other services. Sustainability and energy savings are two key aspects of the building, which has an A energy efficiency rating.

Attendees at the opening ceremony included Xavier Triadó, vice-rector for Digitalization Policy at the UB; Jordi Camarasa, dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences; Carme Vidal, delegate of the rector for the management of the Torribera Food Campus; Jordi Bosch, vice-president for Strategic Projects at the UB; Andrés Lezcano, director for Infrastructures at the UB, and other members of the Barcelona Provincial Council and the Santa Coloma de Gramenet City Council. Other attendees included Glòria Cugat, deputy director for Innovation and Technology Transfer, and Laura Ruano, deputy director for Agri-food Industry Quality, both from the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food of the Government of Catalonia.

The name of the building was agreed upon by the UB, the Barcelona Provincial Council and the Santa Coloma de Gramenet City Council based on a selection voted by the Food Campus community. The name Gramenet is primarily a tribute to the city that hosts the campus, but it also has a link to the world of food. Grama is a grass that was very abundant in Santa Coloma and belongs to the Gramineae family, which also includes cereals, which are the basis of food all over the world.
