Yesterday, Sunday 15 December, the Renaissance Museum of Molins de Rei, located in the renovated Palau Requesens, was officially inaugurated. The rector of the University of Barcleona, Joan Guàrdia, and the mayor of Molins de Rei, Xavier Paz, attended the event. This marks a turning point in the collaboration between the UB and the town of Molins de Rei. The Museum, dedicated to the artistic and historical heritage of the Renaissance, reinforces the close links with the UB Chair on Renaissance Studies in Molins de Rei, directed by Àngel Casals, lecturer at the UB’s Faculty of Geography and History.
The director of the Chair, Àngel Casals, professor at the UB’s Faculty of Geography and History, said that “the Chair and the Museum are part of the same project promoted by the Molins de Rei Town Council since 2014”. Recovering the Palau Requesens as a cultural space dedicated to the Renaissance arose from an initial consultation promoted by the town council at the time, and since then, the Chair has actively collaborated in providing advice, organizing activities and promoting specialized research.

The UB Chair has played a key role in developing scientific content for the Museum, with activities such as meetings for experts, the creation of a book collection and the organization of informative events, such as concerts of Renaissance music. Along these lines, Casals announced that a special concert of Renaissance music will be held at the Museum on 20 December (free admission).

Since its creation, the UB Chair on Renaissance Studies in Molins de Rei has promoted academic research, as was demonstrated on 30 November, with the awarding of the prizes for the best master’s degree final projects to Anna González for “Pacte i conflicte: el Consell de Cent i Felip II en vigílies de torbacions (1585-1588)”, and the presentation of Ona Vila’s grant-winning research project “Estratègies d'integració dels immigrants francesos a la Barcelona del segle XVI. Una aproximació als enllaços amb expòsites de l'Hospital de la Santa Creu”.

The inauguration also highlighted the importance of the collaboration between the UB and Molins de Rei in setting up the Museum. The project was highlighted as an example of the connection between university research, historical heritage and local cultural promotion. The mayor, Xavier Paz, emphasized the potential of the Museum as a cultural and tourist centre, while the rector, Joan Guàrdia, stressed the commitment of the University to projects that link academic research with the territory.

The Renaissance Museum, with a collection of over one hundred works, is a new benchmark in the dissemination of Renaissance art and history in Catalonia. Thanks to the collaboration with the UB Chair on Renaissance Studies in Molins de Rei, research projects and training activities will be promoted that will contribute to strengthening Molins de Rei’s leadership in this field.
