Gaspar Rosselló Nicolau (1950-2025), professor, university manager and leading figure in the academic world with a career deeply linked to the University of Barcelona, has died in an accident in Mallorca.
Rosselló graduated in Physics in 1973 and held a PhD in Physics from the UB. His academic career began in the field of astronomy and astrophysics, until he became a full professor and an active member of the research community in this discipline. Over the years, he participated in 13 research projects funded by entities such as the Centro Argentino de Información Científica y Tecnológica (CAICYT), the Interministerial Science and Technology Commission (CICYT), the Acción Integrada Hispano-Francesa, the Directorate-General for Scientific and Technical Research (DGICYT) and the European Space Agency (ESA), and led as principal investigator the proposal “Analysis of 7296 lunar occultations”. He also supervised several theses in the fields of observational astronomy and astrometry, with contributions published in international scientific journals.

With more than 30 years dedicated to university management, Rosselló established himself as one of the most authoritative and respected voices in the Catalan university system. Since the early 1990s he was a member of several UB governing teams, holding important positions such as director of Academic Affairs, vice-rector for Academic Policy, Students and Quality, and the rector’s advisor on the European Convergence process. He also represented the UB at the University School of Tourism, Hospitality and Gastronomy (CETT) and collaborated with Spanish bodies such as the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA), as well as with academic committees and university governing bodies in Spain and across Europe.

He was recently appointed president of the Ateneu UB, a position that symbolizes institutional recognition of a lifetime of commitment to the university. Involved in both day-to-day management and in defining the main strategic lines, he made a decisive contribution to the modernization of the UB and its adaptation to the new European and international challenges. His work was essential not only in the field of teaching and research, but also in the transformation of the university towards a more autonomous, efficient and quality-focused model.

Gaspar Rosselló received numerous acknowledgements throughout his career. His loss leaves a deep void in the university community, which will remember him for his tireless dedication, his visionary spirit and his human qualities. The University of Barcelona will organize a ceremony in autumn to remember and pay tribute to Dr Rosselló.
