Professor Miquel Calvo dies

Miquel Calvo was an expert in statistics, design of experiments, data analysis and computational statistics. He was co-founder of the consolidated teaching innovation group Statmedia. In terms of research, his activity included publications on the mathematical foundations of statistics, as well as the design and implementation of new multivariate analysis methods applied to genetics. He also collaborated with different research groups with more applied studies on bioinformatics, microbiology and virology, environmental sciences and clinical pathology. He was a member of the UB research group on Viruses, Bacteria and Protozoa of Interest in Public Health and Food Safety. Furthermore, he had also held various management positions in the Faculty.

The Rector, Joan Guàrdia, admired Miquel Calvo’s firm commitment to the UB, especially to the people who form part of it. “Miquel has been an excellent colleague, with a great capacity for teamwork, and, above all, he has been a very good person”, he noted. Guàrdia also highlighted Calvo’s essential role in the shaping of the PDI staff; specifically, regarding the implementation of the LOSU, together with Vice-Rector Abadal: “His meticulous and attentive work has been key in this area”.

The dean of the Faculty of Biology, Rosina Gironés, expressed her sadness at the loss of Miquel Calvo and emphasized that for the Faculty “it has been an immense good fortune to have had him for years holding different positions”. “He has always been an example of calm, excellence in research and management, and ethical values”, she said. She recalled his ability to analyse data and problems “with extraordinary clarity”, as well as the way in which “he always generously offered his help”.
