This ranking assesses the research performance of more than 4,500 universities worldwide using several indicators based on research performance, innovation results and social impact. The SCImago Institutions Rankings include institutions from different sectors: governmental entities, healthcare institutions, universities, businesses and and non-profit organizations. This year, the ranking underwent an important methodological change when placing the positions of each institution: to date, it allowed the institutions placed in lower ranges to obtain higher positions, since all the universities with the same score held one position, and this was not considered when giving the following positions. However, now, they count as many positions as institutions with the same score. This new order system has been applied to the previous editions, which have been recalculated so that they can analyse the evolution of every institution.

In this edition of the SCImago Institutions Rankings, the first position is held by Harvard University, followed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, Harvard Medical School, and Zhejiang University.
