Illa informs university rectors of the Government’s commitment to universities in the new budget

The President of the Government of Catalonia, Salvador Illa, met today with the university governing teams to reaffirm the Government’s commitment to universities, an intention reflected in the proposed new budget, which increases funding for universities and research by 24%. Illa stated that “investing in universities is investing in a better Catalonia for everyone,” and recalled: “We have a clear goal: to be one of the 50 most innovative regions in Europe by 2030.”

The President of the Government of Catalonia, Salvador Illa, met today with the university governing teams to reaffirm the Government’s commitment to universities, an intention reflected in the proposed new budget, which increases funding for universities and research by 24%. Illa stated that “investing in universities is investing in a better Catalonia for everyone,” and recalled: “We have a clear goal: to be one of the 50 most innovative regions in Europe by 2030.” 

The President stated the need to have new accounts that are “worthy of the excellence of our university system, which benefits 300,000 university students.” Illa emphasized that “the Government is committed to a university model based on excellence, diversity, the quality of academic programmes, territorial balance and a strong commitment to research.” 

The meeting was also attended by the Catalan Minister for Research and Universities, Núria Montserrat, and the rectors of the Catalan universities, including the rector of the UB, Joan Guàrdia. In his comments to 3Cat, Guàrdia stressed the need for new budgets to guarantee the stability and strength of the university system and to meet the challenges ahead.
