The University of Barcelona has opened the call for the Elena Maseras and Ribera Awards for research on the UB, an initiative created to mark the institution’s 575th anniversary. The awards aim to promote the study and dissemination of knowledge about the history, heritage, and social impact of the UB, as well as to recognize research in these fields.
The application period began on 20 October 2025 and will remain open until 30 January 2026. Both established researchers and doctoral or master’s students who have conducted research on any aspect related to the UB, from its origins to the present day, are eligible to apply.
The awards are named after Elena Maseras i Ribera (1853–1905), the first woman to enrol in university studies in Spain, specifically at the UB’s Faculty of Medicine in 1872. Her figure symbolises the spirit of openness, equality, and progress that inspires this call.
The projects submitted may address topics related to institutional history, the evolution of scientific knowledge, teaching, university life, or the social contribution of the UB over the centuries. The jury, chaired by the rector of the UB, will place particular emphasis on academic quality, methodological rigour, and the contribution to knowledge of the institution.
The full terms and conditions of the call and the application form can be found on the website of the UB’s Electronic Office.
These awards are part of the programme of activities commemorating the 575th anniversary of the University of Barcelona, which throughout this academic year is promoting institutional, cultural, and scientific initiatives to highlight the University’s historical legacy and its commitment to society and to knowledge.
