The team of the University of Barcelona, made up of students from the University of Experience, has won the Senior Debate League of the Vives University Network. Students from six Catalan universities took part in the competition: the UB, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), the Rovira i Virgili University (URV) and the University of Vic (UVic). The members of the UB team are Jordi Mayné, Dolors Capdevila, Antonia Maria Guerrero, Francesc Pau and Rosa Maria Colom, with Marta Bueno, lecturer at the Faculty of Law, as captain.

The importance of teamwork

Professor Bueno emphasises the importance of teamwork in achieving the victory: “Each member of the team has avoided taking the limelight, and has given the best of themselves to the team, including all those who, without being part of the team directly, have offered us ideas and enriched the preparation of the debate”. Likewise, it has been necessary to prepare for the debate: “The members of the team — continues Bueno — familiarised themselves with the subject by reading specialised books, attending conferences and even specific sessions of the Law and the Social State programme of the University of Experience itself”. The team captain affirms that “winning the Debate League has been the prize for a very good preparation work; it has helped them to learn to be critically educated, to know how to listen, to respect opposing opinions...”. And she concludes: “The simple fact of participating has been experienced by all of us as a prize. The UB’s commitment to the training of seniors through the University of Experience finds in this type of activity the ideal tool to give even more meaning to lifelong learning”.

The theme of this year’s Vives University Network Senior Debate League was a controversial and topical issue: “Is artificial intelligence a threat to humanity?”. The aim of this debating competition is to enhance the skills and competences that senior students can pass on to society for their experience and career.
