A conference analyses the legal challenges facing an increasingly ageing society
The Faculty of Law of the University of Barcelona will host, on 12 and 13 March, the conference “Un dret civil per a les persones grans? Repensar les institucions atenent a necessitats noves” (Civil rights for older persons? Rethinking institutions in response to new needs), which will address the legal challenges of an increasingly ageing society. Issues such as inheritance rights in the case of vulnerable persons and legal mechanisms for protecting personal and financial well-being will be discussed. The conference aims to identify the foundations for safeguarding the autonomy of older people and to provide them with adequate care.

The conference will begin with a session entitled “Les persones grans. Un col·lectiu singular del dret civil”. This will be followed by a series of presentations on inheritance law, an overview of the situation in other legal systems, and a round table discussion on inheritance agreements. The second day of the conference will be devoted to legal tools for the personal and financial well-being of older people, with a round table discussion on preventive powers and another on protected assets. The sessions will conclude with presentations on the future and legislative reforms in this area. There will be a round table discussion on the legal challenges relating to older people and on several current university projects to address them. The conference will close with a lecture by sociologist Marina Subirats and a speech by the rector of the UB, Joan Guàrdia.
The conference is organized within the framework of the project “Mecanismos de previsión patrimonial en una sociedad envejecida: vulnerabilidad, solidaridad y derecho de bienes”.
