Lecturer Pere Comellas receives the 4th Catalan PEN Translation Award

The jury of the 4th Catalan PEN Translation Award distinguished the work of the linguist, translator and lecturer of the Faculty of Philology Pere Comellas in his translation of the book Teoria general de lʼoblit (Edicions del Periscopi), by José Eduardo Agualusa, a novel awarded with the Premi Llibreter in Catalonia. The jury, formed by Joan Casas (president), Anna Aguilar-Amat, Anna Soler Horta, Xènia Dyakonova and Ricard Ripoll, valued the quality of the translation, the importance of the author and the translated work, the absence of Catalan in his works, the originality of the proposal and the incidence of the translation within the countryʼs literary ecosystem.

Lecturer Pere Comellas works in the Area of Galician and Portuguese Studies of the Faculty of Philology of the University of Barcelona and is a member of the Study Group of Endangered Languages (GELA). He is an expert on translation of Portuguese authors, mostly authors from the African Lusophone. He has translated authors such as Eça de Queirós, Moacyr Scliar, Paulina Chiziane, Mia Couto, José Eduardo Agualusa, Fernando Pessoa, Baltasar Lopes, Érico Veríssimo, Bernardo Kucinski, Nathacha Appanah, Edgar Morin, Helena Marques and Gonçalo M. Tavares, among others, and has won the Giovanni Pontiero Translation Award twice.

The Catalan PEN Translation Award distinguishes the best literary translation published in Catalan during the year before the call, awarding the translation and honouring his/her task as a creator of bridges between cultures.
