Antoni Trilla, lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona, has been honoured with the Big Vang Medal for “his altruism and service vocation” to the media with scientific information to share among society. Trilla received this honour in the first Big Vang anniversary ceremony -the online science information channel of La Vanguardia- which took place on June 7 at the Barcelona Macaya Palace.
The Medal is promoted by La Vanguardiaʼs Big Vang channel, in collaboration with RAC1, 8tv and The Catalan Association for Science Communication (ACCC), which were part of the jury. This honour awards the communicative effort of the scientists who collaborate with the media in order to transfer scientific information and avoid false expectations and unnecessary alarms.
Public health crises due to the impact of the influenza A, Ebola virus or the Zika virus are some of the informative scenarios in which Antoni Trilla participated. He is Head of the Preventive Medicine Service and Director of Assistance Quality and Safety of the Clinic Hospital of Barcelona and lecturer at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal). Antoni Trilla was given the award by the journalist Maria Xinxó (8tv) “for his altruism, gentleness, service vocation and great patience (which we often feel sorry for abusing of but we do anyway), for helping media to share not-always-easy ideas about viruses, bacteria and other conflicting creatures with society (including some Homo sapiens)”.
Antoni Trilla holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery and a doctoral degree by the UB, masterʼs degree in Health Economics, masterʼs degree in Hospital Management and Health Services, and post-doctoral degree in Hospital Epidemiology (University of Iowa, USA). He majored in internal medicine, preventive medicine, and public health, and has received the Josep Trueta Medal for health merits given by the Generalitat de Catalunya, among other honours.
