A total of 166 members of the research staff of the UB are listed in the 2% of the worldʼs most influential scientists, since they are the most cited ones in their respective disciplines, according to the new update of the database published by the editorial Elsevier, known as the Stanford ranking. The UB is the Spanish university with the highest figures of researchers in this group of leading scientists. A total of 166 members of the research staff of the UB are listed in the 2% of the worldʼs most influential scientists, since they are the most cited ones in their respective disciplines, according to the new update of the database published by the editorial Elsevier, known as the Stanford ranking. The UB is the Spanish university with the highest figures of researchers in this group of leading scientists. Among the 195,605 scientists in the database, 2,998 are affiliated at Spanish institutions. The UB is followed by the University of Valencia, wit 82 researchers, the Technical University of Catalonia (81) and the Complutense University of Madrid (79). The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is the centre with most highlighted researchers, a total of 545, counting all its research centres in Spain. In Catalonia, the figure of scientists is 742, a 25 % of the State, of which 443 are in public universities, that is, a 60% of those in Catalonia. At a global scale, the country with most researchers in this database is the United States, followed by United Kingdom and Germany. This year, both the number of scientists in this 2% influential researchers and the figures of their country of origin have increased.

The Stanford ranking measures the influence of the research staff regarding their performance and impact, in the knowledge fields where their publications are assigned. It is carried out using the information provided by the Scopus database. Institutional assignments are ascribed based on the last article in the Scopus database for the analysed period, which can affect the results in the case of those research staff members with more than assignation or the temporary mobility of the research.
