The University of Barcelona has improved eleven positions in the Web of Universities Ranking (Webometrics). Specifically, it now ranks 113th in the world and 26th in Europe, and it remains the leader in Spain..

This ranking does not evaluate university websites in terms of number of visitors or design but it uses various indicators of the websites and their activity to rate universities overall in terms of teaching, research and transfer. In the same way that, for example, citations of scientific articles are used as a tool in various rankings, the analysis of web links is used here for quality assessment.

Webometrics aims to promote the academic presence on the web, while supporting open access initiatives. It aims to increase the knowledge transfer generated in universities to society as a whole. It is produced by the Cybermetrics Laboratory of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and measures the websites of more than 31,000 universities worldwide.

In Spain, the UB is followed by the Complutense University of Madrid, holding the 189th position, and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, in holding the 200 position. The UB obtains outstanding positions in the three subcategories of the ranking: "Impact", which refers to the number of links to websites of the institution analysed (position 170); Transparency, on the number of citations received from the best positioned researchers worldwide (146), and Excellence, which quantifies the number of scientific articles placed in the top 10% of the most cited (129).
