Today, Joan Guàrdia, Rector of the University of Barcelona, made official the appointment of the professor of Philosophy Josep Monserrat as the new Vice-Rector for Language Policy. The appointment follows the incorporation of Joan Santanach into the Government of Catalonia as the new Secretary General for Language Policy, who until now had been responsible for language policy as the Rector’s delegate.
Monserrat will give continuity to the actions of the 2022-2024 Governance Plan, led with excellence by Jordi Matas as vice-rector during the first term (2021-2023) and Joan Santanach as delegate in this period of the second term. He also assumes the responsibility of defining and deploying the actions that will make it possible to take a new step forward, hand in hand with governmental institutions and civil society, in the promotion of Catalan in an eminently multilingual context and its central role in the internationalization of the institutions.
Monserrat has a long history of strengthening and disseminating the language as a scientific language in the field of philosophy, as demonstrated by his coordination of the Catalan edition of Immanuel Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason, published by UB Editions this year 2024.
The new vice-rector is a lecturer at the Faculty of Philosophy at the UB, was dean of the Faculty from 2014 to 2022, and also chaired the Catalan Society of Philosophy until 2020. Under his leadership as dean, the Faculty made progress in key areas such as the promotion of research, bringing curricula closer to the new global challenges and adapting the teaching staff to generational change. He is currently director of the EIDOS research group on Platonism and Modernity and evaluator of the doctoral programmes of the Iberoamerican Association of Postgraduate Universities.
