With this award, the UB wishes to pay tribute to a leading figure in contemporary literature, who has produced a prolific piece of work in both Catalan and Spanish. Gimferrer has cultivated poetry, narrative and essays, and has stood out for his ability to renew literary languages from the 1960s to the present day. The author of volumes such as Arde el mar (1966), with made him win the National Poetry Prize, Els miralls (1970) and Fortuny (1983), has also been a leading voice in the field of literary criticism and reflection on art and culture.
Gimferrer, who holds a degree in Philosophy and Arts from the University of Barcelona, has been a member of the Royal Spanish Academy since 1985 and of the Reial Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona since 2008. His work has been recognized with awards such as the Saint George’s Cross (1988), the National Prize for Spanish Literature (1998), the Queen Sofia Prize for Ibero-American Poetry (2000) and the Federico García Lorca International Poetry Prize (2017), among others.
In addition to his creative output, Gimferrer has carried out an important task as an editor and translator, with special attention to the relationship between literature and the visual arts. His critical work has dealt with figures such as Joan Brossa, J. V. Foix, Octavio Paz, Joan Miró, Antoni Tàpies and Gabriel Ferrater, forming a corpus of studies of reference on the Baroque, modernism, the avant-garde and the Generation of ‘27.
With this award, the UB recognizes the intellectual worth of an author who, without ever having received a doctorate or this academic award, has become an indisputable point of reference for Catalan, Spanish and international literature. The ceremony will represent a gesture of justice and recognition for one of the most influential figures in contemporary culture.
