From today, the rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Guàrdia is the new president of the Vives Network of Universities, replacing Josep Eladi Baños Díez, rector of the University of Vic - Central University of Catalonia (UVic-UCC), who has held the position until now. The presidency of the Network changes every six months, on a rotating basis, among all the member universities.
Guàrdia thanked the institution’s General Council — made up of the rectors of the 22 member universities, it is its highest body — for their trust, and underlined the strategic role of the Vives Network as a space for university coordination and influence: “The Network is an active collective that contributes to the structuring of the university system in culture. Assuming its presidency is a challenge and, at the same time, an opportunity for our universities to continue to lead the European Higher Education Area as an engine of social, scientific and cultural transformation”.

The new president will be accompanied by the following team:

  • Oriol Amat i Salas (vice-president I)
  • Eva Alcón Soler, rector of the Jaume I University (vice-president II)
  • Amparo Navarro Faure, rector of the University of Alicante (vice-president III)
  • Josep Eladi Baños Díez, rector of UVic-UCC (vice-president IV)

The new presidency will give continuity to an action plan that includes more than 150 annual initiatives, articulated in eleven work programmes. Among the actions that will be developed with the UB as host university, it is worth mentioning the presentation of the results of the fourth edition of the Via Universitaria report. This study analyses in depth the reality of university students — living conditions, ways of studying, links with the university, cultural habits, economic situation, expectations and values — and provides essential data for institutional and political decision-making.

The UB will also be the venue for the award ceremony of the Xarxa Vives Medal of Honour, a public recognition event for personalities who have stood out for their professional careers and their commitment to science, culture and society. The institution’s highest distinction recognizes excellence and dedication to public service from multiple academic and social disciplines.

At the same time, the UB will host the meetings of the Network’s governing and coordinating bodies, the General Council and the Standing Committee, which oversee the development of the work plan and the day-to-day management of the institution.
