They are united by the passion for mathematics and the desire to share it with other students from all over Spain. This is what encouraged 20 students from the University of Barcelona to present a team and compete in the Mathematics League organized by ANEM (National Association of Mathematics Students). The UB team has currently played nine of the fourteen rounds and is in a privileged position to reach the final phase.
The Mathematics League was created last year with the aim of promoting mathematics, encouraging networking between students from all over Spain and ensuring that the value of mathematics endures over time. “Last year, we signed up and we really enjoyed the experience. It helped us to build relationships between students who didn’t know each other and, if it hadn’t been for the League, we wouldn’t have met”, says Bernat Esteve, a second-year student of Mathematics at the UB’s Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science and coordinator of the University’s team in the League. “Personally, I like to spend time solving a mathematical problem. It’s enormously rewarding when you come up with a solution and apply generating functions to it” adds Esteve.
In this edition, the UB team is doing great. They are getting many options to achieve the final triumph. Out of the nine games played, they have won five matches, drawn two and lost two, which places them third in their group. The competition consists of solving three challenging mathematical problems in 90-minute matches.
The UB group competing is made up of students from different years and degrees: “We have one person from the first year, who is studying a dual-degree in Mathematics and Physics; there are ten people from the second year, from both the Mathematics and the dual-degree, and also people from the third year”, says Bernat Esteve.
As a wish, Esteve wants to keep up the good line of competition to “be able to reach the final and, why not, win it”.
