Sprinter Jaël Bestué, water polo player Elena Ruiz, trampoline gymnast David Vega and hockey players Jordi Bonastre and Eduard de Ignacio-Simó will represent the UB and Catalonia at the top international sporting competition.
Jaël Bestué, a student of Medicine, already has Olympic experience, having competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. An FC Barcelona athlete, she is a specialist in the 200m and the 4 × 100m relay. Bestué stands out for having been the first Spanish woman to run the 60m final at a European Indoor Championships. She also achieved a bronze medal at the 2023 European Games and a seventh place in the 200m final at the 2024 European Athletics Championships.

Elena Ruiz, a student at the National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia (INEFC), is a water polo player. She trained at Club Natació Rubí, and made her debut in the division of honour in the 2017-2018 season. She played for Club Natació Sabadell, with whom she won the Euroleague, the League, the Queen’s Cup and a Catalonia Cup. This season she played for Club Natació Sant Andreu, with whom she won the Copa de la Reina, and was voted the most valuable player (MVP) of the competition. Internationally, she participated in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where she won the silver medal, and was world junior champion in 2021. In 2022, she received the award for the most promising female athlete of the year at the 25th Catalan Sports Festival.

David Vega, INEFC student, will make history with his partner Noemí Romero by becoming the first Spaniards to compete in trampoline gymnastics at the Olympic Games. Vega recently won a silver medal at the 2023 Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships and a bronze medal at the 2024 European Championships, both in the team competition.

Jordi Bonastre, also an INEFC student, has been captain of the Spanish under-21 hockey team and won the gold medal at the 2021 Junior World Championship. A player for Atlètic Terrassa, he secured his participation in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games thanks to the victory of the Spanish men’s national team against Ireland in the Pre-Olympic in Valencia last January.

Eduard de Ignacio-Simó, an INEFC student, is a hockey player at Club Deportivo Terrassa. In 2021 he played with the Spanish under-21 national team in the Junior World Cup. The following year, the senior national team called him up for the first time to play against the Netherlands in the men’s FIH Pro League.

The presence of these five students at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games shows the UB’s commitment to sports and the training of top-level athletes, confirming its role as a benchmark in Catalan and Spanish university sport.
