The latest title in the popular science collection Catàlisi is Tots els colors de l’Univers. La descoberta de l’espectre de radiació electromagnètica, by Pere Serra Coromina. The book narrates the evolution of the knowledge of the electromagnetic spectrum, the intangible reality that extends from radio waves to gamma rays and of which we only see a tiny part: visible light. It all began in 1666, when a young English student demonstrated that white light from the sun contained all the colours of the rainbow. Pere Serra Coromina will be signing copies of the book on Saturday 21 at 12.00 noon at the UB Edicions stand.

The Filosofia UB collection is celebrating: on the one hand, it presents Filosofia política. Una introducció, a choral work edited by Sergi Morales-Gálvez, Elvira Riera Gil, Lluís Pérez Lozano and Marc Sanjaume Calvet, which invites us to rethink our opinions and to participate in the debate to build a fairer and freer society. The co-publishers will sign the book on Wednesday 25 September at 6.30 p.m. at the publisher’s stand. Also, at 5.00 p.m., Stage 1 of the Catalan Book Week will host an event dedicated to the translation of philosophical pieces in which Immanuel Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason, translated into Catalan for the first time and published as part of the collection’s Magna Series, will be discussed.

Speaking of translations, Greek and Latin translations have, over the centuries, occupied a prominent place in research into the influence of the classics on Catalan literature. We have published Les traduccions catalanes dels clàssics, edited by Jordi Malé, which studies some Catalan versions of Greek and Latin authors from the 14th century to the present day. Those published in the 20th century predominate, due to the great impetus given by the Bernat Metge Foundation to the dissemination of the classics among the Catalan public, in addition to its fundamental role in the enrichment and consolidation of the language. The book is the sixth volume in the Aula Carles Riba collection.

We celebrate that the Història de les Arts Escèniques Catalanes now has a second volume: Del naixement del teatre modern al neoclassicisme (segles XVI-XVIII), by Alberto Rossich, which presents a synthesis of the theatrical and spectacular activity developed throughout the modern age in the Catalan-speaking territories. The volume aims to overcome the lack of knowledge that has existed about many aspects of this reality, as well as to bring together subjects that have too often been treated separately: cultured and popular theatre, dramatic pieces in different languages, texts and scenography, literature and music, actors and theatres, companies and audiences.

From 20 to 29 September, the Passeig de Lluís Companys is hosting the 42st edition of the Catalan Book Week. University of Barcelona Editions presents new publications in physics, philosophy, literature, theatre, philosophy and poetry, as well as a selection from its editorial collection.

As for poetry, the ReVersos collection is consolidated with a second title: Tothora fos encís / Desolvidar, by Francesc Parcerisas and Aurora Luque, which offers a personal choice of both previously published and unpublished verses. The edition includes an “Umbral” by Noemí Montetes Mairal i Laburta, director of the collection, in which she reflects on the poetics of both authors. She considers both poets masters in the treatment of these dichotomies and describes the volume as “a double and singular lyrical invitation to the everyday miracle of existence, the miracle of going, like Icarus, to meet the light”.

The Catalan Book Week is the perfect setting for the Joan Lluís Vives awards for university publishing, which this year recognized Filòsofes de la contemporaneïtat (best arts and humanities book), by Núria Sara Miras Boronat; El món d’avui. De la guerra freda als reptes de la interdependència global (best social science book), by Antoni Segura i Mas, and ¿Mujeres? Hombres? Sexo y género, biología y cultura (best science and technology book), by Jordi Casanova i Roca. The event at which the authors of the winning works will talk will take place on Monday 23 September, at 11.15 a.m., on Stage 1.
