UB Editions launches a collection on Palestinian literature
Palestina en Paraules is a collection created to foster knowledge of Palestinian literature and to promote the translation into Catalan and Spanish of works by Palestinian authors that have not yet been translated. Promoted by researchers from the Arab and Islamic Studies Section at the University of Barcelona, it aims to highlight the centrality and richness of an essential literary tradition, with special attention to the voices of women. Each volume, in bilingual format, incorporates a graphic work by a Palestinian artist because the visual arts, like literature, are a language and a form of resistance, and their symbolisms dialogue with each other. In a historical context marked by colonial violence and ongoing genocide against Palestine, this collection aims to be a space for critical reading, cultural transmission and recognition of the political and poetic power of the voices of this people.
Ibrahim Nasrallah (1954) is a Palestinian poet, novelist, teacher, journalist, painter and photographer. He grew up in a refugee camp in Amman, Jordan. His work, translated into numerous languages, keeps alive the historical memory of Palestine over the past 250 years. With more than 20 novels and 15 collections of poetry, he is one of the most widely read and awarded voices in contemporary Arab literature.
Zaid Ayasa (1984) was born in Nablus and grew up in Jenin, Palestine. His work focuses on digital and mobile art, which he understands as a means of expression, resistance and freedom in an occupied territory. Through graphic design, video and soundscape, he creates pieces that dialogue with Palestinian memory and culture. He has shown his work in exhibitions and festivals in Palestine, Jordan, Europe and other territories.
The UB’s Faculty 18 project, inspired by the Barcelona City Council’s District 11 project, will be launched for the 2025-2026 academic year. Faculty 18 will be an institutional and academic platform on the situation of the Palestinian people, and will serve as a permanent link with the Palestinian university system, starting with the three public universities in the Gaza Strip. It should also function as an institutional umbrella for all the actions already being carried out at the UB.
