On Saturday 18 March, the museography of the air-raid shelter located in the basement of Museu Torre Balldovina, in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, was inaugurated in an event presided by the town mayor, Núria Parlon. Among the attendees were Rafel Sospedra, head of the museography project of the space and lecturer at the Department of Applied Didactics of the Faculty of Education of the University of Barcelona, and member of the Research Group on Heritage Didactics (DIDPATRI).
It is the only theatricalized air-raid shelter turned into a museum in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area.

On Saturday 18 March, the museography of the air-raid shelter located in the basement of Museu Torre Balldovina, in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, was inaugurated in an event presided by the town mayor, Núria Parlon. Among the attendees were Rafel Sospedra, head of the museography project of the space and lecturer at the Department of Applied Didactics of the Faculty of Education of the University of Barcelona, and member of the Research Group on Heritage Didactics (DIDPATRI).
The air-raid shelter in Museu Torre Balldovina, which strengthens and expands the unique collaboration between the UB and the Town Council of Santa Coloma de Gramenet, is the only theatricalized shelter turned into a museum in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area. The works to offer this heritage asset to the citizens have been carried out over three years, under the supervision of the Department of Historical Memory of Santa Coloma de Gramenet. The Area of Culture and of Presidency of the Barcelona Provincial Council, the Direction-General for Democratic Memory and the Democratic Memorial of the Catalan Government have participated as well.
The visit, in small groups and with a guide due to the building features of the shelter, allows you to imagine some experiences using audiovisual elements, informative panels and atrezzo objects.
The importance of the museography arrangement lies in the fact that this is the first air-raid shelter in Catalonia that has a vanguard museography that emphasizes the didactic factor: it facilitates the understanding of the historical and geographical coordinates of the place and it gives relevance to the access of schoolchildren. The implemented museography, in which the digital and audiovisual factors play a major role, is solid, sustainable, zero kilometer and easy to control.
The shelter space was hard to museumize, since it is a gallery shelter, with 80-cm wide corridors. In this sense, the proposal becomes a model, which leads the way to the museography of other shelters and the recovery of this important heritage, which is especially relevant in Catalonia. This initiative has been carried out thanks to the collaboration of UB students who have taken recreational actions and who have participated in this service-learning key experience.
