At today’s ordinary session of the Governing Council, the Rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Guàrdia, reported on two important issues for the present and future of the institution: the deployment of the Organic Law of the University System (LOSU) and the status of the strategic project in the field of mathematics, computing, economics and health (MIES-UB).
Regarding the LOSU, the Rector highlighted the joint work being carried out with the Department of Research and Universities of the Government of Catalonia to make effective the teaching posts that will be created from the funds provided for in the law. In this regard, Guàrdia commented that the calls corresponding to the years 2024, 2025 and 2026 will be very important with regard to the allocation of job positions.
With regard to the MIES-UB project, Joan Guàrdia stated that the last plenary session of Barcelona City Council gave “absolute support” to the definitive validation of this plan, which will allow the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science to move to Diagonal, the creation of research spaces for the Faculty of Economics and Business, and the expansion of the Barcelona Science Park (PCB).
Tenure lecturers
The Vice-Rector for Teaching and Research Staff of the UB, Ernest Abadal, has informed the Governing Council about the distribution of lecturer positions within the Programme for the Incorporation of Teaching and Research Talent in Spanish Public Universities. This programme of the Ministry of Science and Universities aims to compensate public universities for the changes in teaching dedication resulting from the LOSU, which establishes reductions in adjunct professor contracts of more than 120 hours and the reduction of lecturers to 180 hours of teaching. The UB is allocated 365 posts, 220 of which will be advertised in November 2024 to have the contracts signed by June 2025.
In the academic sphere, the regulations governing blended and distance learning in the UB’s official bachelor’s and master’s degree courses have been approved. The UB’s Vice-Rector for Academic Policy, Pilar Delgado, stressed that the aim is to establish the criteria applicable to the design and subsequent development of all the UB’s official degree courses.
Finally, Delgado also reported on the pre-enrolment data for the 2024-2025 academic year and highlighted the fact that the UB maintains “its ability to attract students", as the institution has six of the ten most popular degree courses: Medicine on the Clínic Campus (first place), Business Administration and Management (second place), Psychology (third place), Dentistry (fifth place), Law (eighth place) and Medicine on the Bellvitge Campus (ninth place). The vice-rector emphasized that more than 30% of the UB’s bachelor’s degree courses are in the upper range of the cut-off marks and that, in terms of master’s degree courses, pre-enrolment has increased by 7%.
