The University of Barcelona will host five students from Palestine, mainly women, as part of its Transition Course to university studies, an action included in the UB Support program for refugees and people from conflict areas, which is managed by the UB Solidarity Foundation. This action is in line with the measures approved by the UB’s Executive Council and Governing Council in relation to the motion in support of Palestine approved by the UB Senate.

The 2024-2025 call for applications for the sixth edition of the course, which will begin in November, provides for the awarding of ten grants, five of which will go to students from Palestine, given the serious situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory of the West Bank and Gaza. The aim of the UB’s Transition Course to University Studies is to promote the incorporation of refugee students or students in refugee-like situations, as defined by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), into the last two years of undergraduate or master’s degree courses at the UB. Since its launch in 2016, 75 people have benefited from the programme.

Specifically, the proposal is aimed at non-EU students who are threatened or displaced in their countries of origin, or refugees in countries of first reception or trafficking, and is part of what the UNHCR defines as complementary and safe pathways for the resettlement of refugees in third countries.

What does this aid offer?

The UB guarantees the selected students comprehensive support for their studies and accommodation, consisting of covering the cost of enrolment fees and the UB residence hall, a monthly allowance of 200 euros, private health insurance, academic guidance and psycho-emotional, psychological and legal assistance.

This initiative is co-funded by the University of Barcelona, the UB Solidarity Foundation and the Directorate of Human Rights, Global Justice and International Cooperation Services of Barcelona City Council.

The deadline for receipt of applications is 12 June 2024 at midnight.
