On Tuesday 22 October, the exhibition “20 years of the CRAI” was inaugurated on the first floor of the Arts Courtyard of the University of Barcelona’s Historic Building. The exhibition commemorates the two decades of the Learning and Research Resources Centre (CRAI) and will remain open to the public until 25 November.
The rector, Joan Guàrdia, the vice-rector for Culture, Memory and Heritage Agustí Alcoberro, the vice-rector for Digitization Policy, Xavier Triadó, and the director of the CRAI, Judit Casals, inaugurated the exhibition, which offers a complete overview of the evolution of the centre since its creation in 2004 and highlights the fundamental role in the adaptation of university libraries to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and the European Research Area (ERA).
On the first floor of the Arts Courtyard, filled to capacity, with a good part of all the active and retired CRAI professionals, Casals thanked the creators of the exhibition for their work, and said that “this exhibition reminds us of who we are and precisely why we are here”. Vice-rector Alcoberro said that “the CRAI is the custodian of an immense and invaluable heritage, and is a model of management and innovation, which are exemplary”. Triadó wanted to highlight the “strategic plan undertaken, to provide service to those to come, thinking about the year 2040”. To close the round of speeches, the rector said that “the meaning of the event is to celebrate internally a service of the house, which is much older than twenty years, and which gives the relevance it deserves in the library, as a central element of the University”.
The CRAI library, heir to the UB’s century-old library, was founded in 2004 in response to the need to adapt university libraries to the European higher education and research areas. The exhibition shows how the CRAI has become a benchmark in the university sphere and has integrated library services and resources, the management of documentary heritage and support for learning, research and teaching.
The exhibition highlights aspects such as the technological evolution in the management of information and documentation at the UB, with examples of how the CRAI constantly faces new challenges, or the commitment to quality, alliances, open science and the community. It also recognizes the work of the team of professionals who are and have been behind it, with some of the protagonists who make up the current CRAI team.
The 20th anniversary celebration includes a number of complementary activities, such as guided tours by the exhibition curator, Lluís Anglès, to be held on 29 October and 5 November, which will give visitors a deeper insight into the history and impact of the CRAI. To participate, registration is required.
To round off this celebration of the CRAI’s twentieth anniversary, a concert will be held on 25 November.
The exhibition can be visited from Monday to Friday, from 9.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m., on the first floor of the UB’s Historic Building’s Arts Courtyard (Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, 585). Admission is free and open to the entire university community and the general public.
