After passing through the universities of Lleida, Tarragona and Girona and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, the first University Correllengua culminated its journey with a closing event on Thursday 20 February in the Plaça de la Universitat. The event which was organized by the National Youth Council of Catalonia (CNJC) with the support of student organizations, and included the reading of a manifesto and several cultural performances.
The University Correllengua is an initiative promoted by the CNJC, in collaboration with the student movement, with the aim of promoting the use of Catalan in the university environment and generating spaces for debate on the present and future of the language in the academic community. Over the last few months, the Correllengua flame has passed through the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, the University of Girona, the University of Lleida and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, where activities such as talks, workshops and cultural performances linked to the Catalan language and identity have been organized.
This movement arises in a context of concern about the presence of Catalan in universities, especially in master’s degrees, where only 39% of the teaching hours are taught in this language. The aim of the University Correllengua has been to raise awareness of this situation in the academic community and to demand the use of Catalan as a vehicular language in higher education.
The closing event in Barcelona was organized by the youth organizations that form part of the Grup Motor Correllengua. The day began with the symbolic arrival of the flame at the Plaça de la Universitat, followed by the reading of the manifesto of the University Correllengua, which includes the main reflections and demands that arose along the route. The event ended with various musical performances, bringing this first edition of the project to a close with a cultural and protest celebration.
