The University of Barcelona hosts an international conference on Palestine

The University of Barcelona, through the Centre for International Historical Studies (CEHI), is organizing the international conference “Palestina. Marcs, reflexions i perspectives”, from 4 to 6 June, at the UB’s Faculty of Geography and History. The University of Barcelona, through the Centre for International Historical Studies (CEHI), is organizing the international conference “Palestina. Marcs, reflexions i perspectives”, from 4 to 6 June, at the UB’s Faculty of Geography and History. During the sessions, the conflict between Palestine and Israel will be analysed from different perspectives, with the presence of speakers who are well known for their analysis of the situation in the region. 

The conference will be inaugurated on Wednesday 4 June at 9.00 am, in the presence of the rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Guàrdia. This will be followed by the opening conference “La cuestión palestina en perspectiva histórica”, with the participation of Salman Abu Sitta, president of the Palestinian Land Society and one of the leading experts in documenting the forced displacement of the Palestinian community, and Ilan Pappé (via videoconference), one of the most renowned Israeli historians. The opening conference will be given by Antoni Segura, professor at the UB’s Faculty of Geography and History. 

On June 4, the session “Descolonización, resistencias y cambios globales” will focus on the historical and political perspective of Palestine. The panel will include attorney Diana Buttu, via videoconference, from the Institute for Middle East Understanding (IMEU), who has been involved as a Palestinian legal advisor in peace negotiations; Yara Hawari, co-director of Al Shabaka, a leading independent Palestinian think tank; and Rabab Abdulhadi, professor at San Francisco State University and a member of the same association. 

Thursday, June 5 

On 5 June, discussions will focus on the Palestinian refugee population, international law and new forms of violence against the Palestinian people. The roundtable “La cuestión de la población refugiada palestina: La UNRWA y el derecho al retorno” (The Palestinian Refugee Issue: UNRWA and the Right of Return) will feature speakers Lex Takkenberg, Senior Advisor at the Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development (ARDD), and Oroub El-Abed, professor at Birzeit University in Palestine. 

International law and the Palestinian issue will be the main theme of the afternoon conference on 5 June, with the participation of Francesca Albanese (remote), UN special rapporteur on the Palestinian Territories; Raji Sourani, director of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights in Gaza; and Doireann McCarthy, researcher at Al Haq, a Palestinian human rights organization.

6 June, conference closing  

Finally, on 6 June, issues such as the resistance and peace-building movements in Palestine and the treatment received by the Palestinian media will be analysed. The journalist Mariam Barghouti will give a lecture followed by a roundtable with the participation of Isabel Pérez, from the Euro-Arab Foundation, and Joan Roura, TV3 journalist. 

The conference is organized by the UB CEHI, the Valentín de Foronda Institute of Social History of the University of the Basque Country and the Institute of Peace and Conflicts of the University of Granada.
