The University of Barcelona is organising an international conference on the origins of the witch-hunts, to be held from 4 to 6 July, as part of the commemoration of the sixth centenary of the oldest anti-witchcraft law in Europe, promoted by the Valls d'Àneu Cultural Council, the Dansàneu festival and the UB itself. This was announced by the vice-rector of Culture, Memory and Heritage of the UB, Agustí Alcoberro, during the official presentation of the Dansàneu, which took place in the Aula Magna last Friday.

The festival, which will take place from 26 July to 4 August in the Vall d’Àneu, will maintain the themes of dance, music and heritage, adding a specific one on language. The holding of the international conference on witch-hunting, organised by the UB’s Institut de Recerca en Cultures Medievals (IRCVM), coincides with the sixth centenary of the Ordinances d’Aneu of 1424, the first legal condemnation of the crime of witchcraft in Europe.

During the presentation, Rut Martínez, director of Dansàneu; Ferran Rella, president of the Cultural Council of the Vall d’Àneu, the organising body of the festival, and Pau Castell and Meritxell Simó, professors at the UB, among others, took part. The Menorcan singer Anna Ferrer and the dancers Èlia Genís and Carla Piris, performers of the production Vela, by Magdalena Garzón, performed there. The artist Marta Ricart also took part, showing part of the work Sursum, which she is preparing ad hoc for the church of Sant Joan d’Isil (Alt Àneu).
