The University of Barcelona will have a videopodcast about sex
Breaking prejudices and linguistic schemes, overcoming embarrassment and communication habits and promoting the use of sexual terminology in Catalan. These are the aims of Cardemcat, the project that has won the 1st Maria Sabater Videopodcast Competition promoted by the University of Barcelona. This competition, named after Maria Sabater — the first announcer on Radio Barcelona and a pioneer in the Spanish radio world — aims to encourage the creation of self-managed content by students. It is open to all undergraduate, postgraduate and master’s degree students at the UB.

The second prize in the competition went to Desubica’t, with its proposal to encourage students and address issues that arouse the interest of young people. Via Làctia, a videopodcast that aims to encourage interest in the cultural world from different perspectives, was awarded third prize. The cash prize is 3,000 euros for the winning proposal, 1,000 euros for the second runner-up and 500 euros for the third runner-up.
The three finalists of the first edition of the competition were presented on Thursday 26 September at the UB’s Faculty of Philology and Communication. The jury of professional podcasters was formed by Begoña Gómez, Roger Carandell, Albert Bazán and Marc Cadafalch. The rector of the UB, Joan Guàrdia, also attended this event, which was presented by the Director of Communication, Laura Rosel.
In a field in which anglicisms and Spanish-speaking expressions predominate, this videopodcast opens up a space to get to know and enjoy the dialectological richness of the Catalan language, idioms and popular sayings. With a special emphasis on the value of people’s experiences, the episodes of the videopodcast will also emphasize the values of sexual diversity, sexuality at all ages, paraphilias, and other content related to this subject.
Cardemcat will be published on the UB’s Ivoox and Spotify channels in audio format, and on the UB’s YouTube channel in video format. The winning team will be in charge of the production, script and voice-over of the programme during the academic year 2024-2025, and will be provided with technical support and material for the production of the episodes, as well as the dissemination of the programme through the UB’s communication channels. The programme is scheduled to premiere on 14 November 2024, the 100th anniversary of the first radio broadcast in Catalonia.
Desubica’t — the second winner of the competition — is an initiative promoted by Judith Artesero, Nicolás Díaz, Marta Urquiz, Carlos Herguido and Pau Benito. With a casual and relaxed tone, the videopodcast aims to capture the audience’s attention with topics of transversal interest about university life — scholarships, work, current affairs, faculties, etc. — with interviews and content that become a real meeting point for students.
The third prize went to Via Làctia, the videopodcast devised by Clara García, Aurèlia Torné and Carla Rubio. With talk show elements, Via Làctia is a cultural and radio magazine, with a visual and sound identity, which aims to encourage interest in culture in all its aspects and the participation of pupils. Each episode analyses a topic connected to the current cultural and social agenda, always from the perspective of entertainment and reflection.
During the event, Rector Joan Guàrdia highlighted the elements of innovation in communication — and also of entertainment — in the university environment, promoted by the projects of the 1st Maria Sabater Videopodcast Competition, as well as “the value of breaking stereotypes and the ways of doing things within the framework of the University of Barcelona, which will reach 575 years of history in 2025”.
