The alliance of European universities CHARM-EU, which is coordinated by the University of Barcelona, has prepared a conference this year focused on interculturalism. The activities include the Annual Conference and the Cultural Festival, which are organized for the first time in the nine universities that make up CHARM-EU. The UB has organized the Instagram Short Film Festival.
In the framework of CHARM-EU 2024, the Annual Conference will examine the issue of different cultures and will deepen the challenge of transnational and inter-institutional collaboration within and outside partnerships. The meeting, “Intercultural awareness in European Universities”, will take place at the Loránd Eötvös University in Budapest (Hungary) on 5 November.

European university alliances, and European higher education institutions in general, work in an intercultural and border environment. In particular, alliances such as CHARM-EU are in a unique position that brings with it both challenges and opportunities. Through a series of presentations, panel discussions and workshops, the Annual Conference will focus on professional aspects of languages, cultures and intercultural learning, to discover opportunities and challenges for European university alliances. The event will bring together students, members of the PDI and PTGAS, representatives of other alliances, policy makers and external entities.

The first CHARM-EU Cultural Festival will also take place. This activity aims to showcase the languages and cultures of the CHARM-EU members and to engage visitors in activities that provide an insight into the cultures of the CHARM-EU member universities in a playful way.

The UB has also organized the Short Film Festival on Instagram, an opportunity for students to showcase their creativity by making a short film about intercultural experiences. It aims to promote the alliance’s shared values of equality, diversity and inclusion, as well as to foster intercultural dialogue and exchange among students. Students enrolled in any educational programme of the nine CHARM-EU partners can participate until 27 October.

A selection of the students’ videos will be published on CHARM-EU’s Instagram account and the winning short film will be awarded with two full tickets to the Primavera Sound Festival 2025, which will take place on 5-7 June in Barcelona (travel and accommodation costs not included).

About CHARM-EU

CHARM-EU is an alliance of nine European universities working to create the university of the future and reconcile humanity with the planet. In this fourth edition, the master’s degree in Global Challenges for Sustainability brings together students, academics and businesses to address the challenges of the 21st century. Apart from educational outcomes, the alliance also works on innovative research projects and methodologies, focusing on the involvement of extra-academic actors, the development of a common research and innovation agenda, and the integration of open science. CHARM-EU’s pedagogical and research approach is based on transdisciplinarity, equity and innovation to foster excellence, quality and competitiveness within the European Universities initiative.
