The University of Barcelona and the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation have presented today, in the Historic Building, the UB-Antoni Esteve i Subirana Chair on Pharmacology Research, which bears the name of both institutions. This collaboration between the University and the Foundation aims to promote research in pharmacology through a series of actions aimed largely at young researchers starting their careers.
Specifically, the efforts of the Chair focus on promoting research and knowledge transfer in the areas of basic, clinical and social pharmacology. One of the most important actions is the recruitment of young talent in research, through contracts to prepare the doctoral thesis or do a postdoctoral stay in the UB’s Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences; this initiative has a funding of 45,000 euros. Other important actions include the creation of a prize for the best final master’s thesis related to pharmacology, the organization of scientific dissemination seminars and lectures and research conferences for doctoral students, and the preparation and publication of articles on pharmacology in the Foundation’s journals.

The Chair’s director, Mercè Pallàs, professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences, said that “the future of pharmacology research depends on our ability to nurture and support young scientists, to give them the resources and support they need”. At the same time, she thanked the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation “for its initiative and for sharing the vision of a world in which science and research must be valued and encouraged”.

On the other hand, Joan Guàrdia, rector of the University of Barcelona, pointed out that this is a “special chair” because of the link between the University and the Foundation: “It is a clear commitment to a public-private complicity that allows us to achieve shared objectives”.

Laura Gil-Vernet, president of the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation, stressed that “public-private collaboration has proven to be a necessary option for progress: in this sense, we are committed to generating innovative and applied science following the path marked by doctor Antoni Esteve Subirana, who inspired the origin and aims of the Foundation”.

Jordi Camarasa, dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences, stressed that this chair was created “willing to improve students' training and to promote research in pharmacology, which will have clear benefits for the health and welfare of society”.

Both institutions highlighted the importance of the agreement, which will involve the joint work of the only public centre that offers a degree in Pharmacy in Catalonia and the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation, founded in 1982 to stimulate progress in pharmacotherapeutics through research.

Mercè Segarra, vice-rector for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Transfer at the UB, and representatives of the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation attended the event.
