Carles Simó, professor of Applied Mathematics, receives today the 2012 National Research Award

Today, Monday 18th March, at 7 p.m., the National Theatre of Catalonia hosts the award ceremony of the 2012 National Research Awards. One of the awardees is Carles Simó, professor of Applied Mathematics from the Faculty of Mathematics, affiliated centre with the BKC, of the University of Barcelona, and industrial engineer from the School of Industrial Engineering of Barcelona (ETSEIB). Arthur Mas, president of the Government of Catalonia, chairs the event that will include a concert by the pianist and composer Albert Guinovart.

The Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRi), supported by the Government of Catalonia, announces the National Research Awards which aim at encouraging social recognition of science and, specially, at disseminating the scientific activity carried out by researchers. The awards recognize those researchers who are part of the Catalan research and innovation system and have recently contributed to the international progress of any field of knowledge: human and social sciences, life and health sciences, engineering and technology and experimental sciences.
The jury of 2012 Awards was composed by the secretary for Universities and Research, Antoni Castellà; the director general for Research, Josep M. Martorell; the president of the Parc Taulí Foundation, Ramon Pascual; the researcher and former director of the Centre for Genomic Regulation, Miguel Beato; the director general of Corporació Sanitària Clínic, Joan Rodés; the professor of Economics from the UAB Salvador Barberà; the director of the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia, Jordi Isern, and the professor from the Department of Contemporary History of the UAB Albert Balcells. The director of FCRi, Enric Claverol, was the secretary.
Besides Carles Simó (National Research Award), 2012 awardees are: Ben Lehner, ICREA research professor at the Centre for Genomic Regulation (National Research Award for Young Talent); Pere Balsells, Catalan entrepreneur who lives in the USA (National Award for Scientific Patronage); Henkel, Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (National Award for Public-Private Partnership), and La Vanguardia (National Award for Science Communication).
Carles Simó is one of the leaders in mathematical research in Catalonia. Internationally, he has been recognized for its contributions to the following fields: dynamical systems, differential equations, celestial mechanics, astrodynamics and numerical analysis. During his professional career, he has published more than 200 papers in international journals and collaborated in a great number of conferences and seminars at worldwide universities. Moreover, he has led more than 25 doctoral theses and educated more than one hundred professors in Mathematics who are now working in worldwide universities and companies.
