The UB-Avinent Chair on Research in Digital Dentistry was presented today in the Aula Ramón y Cajal at the Historic Building of the University of Barcelona. The collaboration between the two institutions includes the promotion of training and research activities in this sector of dentistry.
Specifically, lifelong education courses will be promoted at the UB’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, aimed at Avinent professionals in the fields of implantology, bone regeneration, prosthetics and orthodontics. On the other hand, protocols for pre-clinical and clinical studies will be developed and reviewed before and after commercialization, in addition to generating at least five publications in indexed journals related to the Chair’s activity. This Chair will also be the platform from which proposals will be channelled to develop new products and tools applicable to contemporary dental care.
Eduard Valmaseda, professor of Oral Surgery at the UB and director of the Chair said that “this chair continues the collaboration between the University of Barcelona and Avinent, and expands its field of action”. “In addition to dental implants, the objectives include research into removable orthodontic devices and personalized devices for the rehabilitation of atrophic jaws. Digital skills are an increasingly important part of the undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum in dentistry, and the new UB-Avinent Chair on Research in Digital Dentistry is a big step forward in integrating them”, added Valmaseda.
Joan Guàrdia, rector of the UB, noted that “an institution like the University of Barcelona needs resources to be able to maintain its leadership and stretch the rope of science, and one of the ways to do this is by going hand in hand with business”. “A Chair implies the will of a university to continue creating innovation and knowledge, and that of a company to support these pillars of our society”, said Guàrdia.
Carles Subirà, vice-dean of dentistry at the UB’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, pointed out that “thanks to partners like Avinent, dentistry continues to advance as a specific discipline and to gain credibility”. “We have one of the best dentistry in the world”, he concluded.
On the other hand, the CEO of Avinent, Albert Giralt, expressed his pride in collaborating with the UB: “Our aim is to advance the profession, to enable students to access more advanced technologies and to do so in a structural way, as this chair represents”.
The Chair reinforces the joint work between Avinent, a renowned institution in the field of implantology, dental prosthetics, digital dentistry and orthodontics, and the UB. Through the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, the University will contribute all its teaching and research experience in this field.
