Successful ceremony to honour UB athletes for the 2023-2024 academic year

The ceremony was presided over by the rector, Joan Guàrdia, and the vice-rector Marta Ferrer, and distinguished the most outstanding sportsmen and women, as well as the tutors and faculties involved in the promotion of university sport.

This Monday, 18 November, the University of Barcelona held the ceremony to recognize the athletes of the 2023-2024 academic year, in the Paranymph Hall of the Historic Building. The event, which was attended by the Rector, Joan Guàrdia, and the Vice Rector for Students and University Life, Marta Ferrer, recognized both the sporting achievements of students and the involvement of various faculties and tutors in the promotion of university sport.
The dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences, Jordi Camarasa, received a plaque for his faculty, which has contributed the most participants to the University Leagues. The Penyafort-Montserrat University Hall of Residence also received an award for its support and participation in these competitions since 2012.
During the ceremony, diplomas were awarded to the 166 University of Barcelona athletes who excelled in Catalan, Spanish and European competitions, both individually and as part of the UB national teams. The National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia (INEFC) also played an important role in the ceremony, with its director, José Luis López del Amo, receiving the trophy for the most students and medallists in the UB national teams. Likewise, the career of Ramon Picó, a former futsal player and coach, received a commemorative plaque for his contribution to the UB team.
The ceremony also paid tribute to the tutors of the Tutoresport UB programme, with plaques for M. Esther Esteban Torné, from the Faculty of Biology, and Arnald Grabulosa Rodríguez, from the Faculty of Chemistry, for their exemplary dedication as mentors of student athletes.
The event ended with the presentation of plaques to the best athletes in the Unirun race: Marta Sabaté Tormos, from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Víctor Aguilera, from the Faculty of Economics and Business. The latter faculty also received a cup in recognition of being the one that has contributed the most participants to the Unirun 2024 race.
Student Carla Ugena Agramunt, from the Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Management, closed the event with a moving speech on behalf of all the UB athletes, in which she highlighted the value of sport in the context of higher education. Overall, the ceremony for the UB’s athletes highlighted the institution’s commitment to academic and sporting excellence.
