According to the new edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), better known as the Shanghai ranking, the University of Barcelona is ranked in the 151-200 frame in the world and reaffirms its leadership among Spanish universities.

The rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Guàrdia, was glad to maintain the scientific and academic excellence of the institution one more year: “With the funding we public universities have, being among the top 200 universities worldwide in an environment led by centers with more resources is a highlight we achieve thanks to the efforts and dedication of the UB community”.

The ARWU ranking analyses some 2,500 universities worldwide and publishes the ranking of the top 1,000. In this year’s edition, the UB once again obtained a significant score in the indicator that quantifies indexed publications (scientific production), with a score of 51, and maintained its per capita performance, with a score of 28.1.

Once again, American universities lead the world ranking. The top positions are held by Harvard University and Stanford University, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in third place.

Nine other universities are among the top 500 in Spain: The Universitat de València (201-300), the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Autonomous University of Madrid, the Complutense University of Madrid, Pompeu Fabra University, University of Granada and University of the Basque Country (301-400), and the Polytechnic University of Valencia and University of Sevilla (401-500).

The Shanghai ranking analyses bibliometric data with six indicators: the number of significant awards (Nobel Prize, Fields Medal) obtained by students and staff at universities; the most cited researchers in the twenty-one research areas determined by the Clarivate databases; articles published in Nature and Science; articles registered in the Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE) and in the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI); and finally, academic efficiency according to the dimensions of the institution (productivity).
